That’s an odd question. In an effort to be timely, let’s look into it. For example, what is the normative and dominant thinking for how to treat enemies? Hurt them in some way. Break them. Kick them out. Silence them. Publicly ridicule them. Lie about them. Deny them justice. Throw them in prison. Hit them before they hit you. Hit them harder than they can hit you. Hit them where it hurts the most. Knock them down and keep them down. Ruin them any way you can. Some would even kill them. You have probably heard or have seen any number of these responses, even recently. Likely you will see more tomorrow and the next day. All of these responses can be summed up in one word: hatred.
The voice behind all of these is Satan, but it is heard through many voices around us. This can make it hard to hear Jesus. Perhaps you have even found yourself voicing some of that hatred yourself, in some form or fashion. Or maybe you have supported those who were doing this because you saw their enemy as your enemy. When you see someone as an enemy, you lose yourself in the hatred and end up in places you never imagined you would be. No treatment of the enemy is too bad or wrong. In fact, the ends of hurting them will justify the means of how you do it, no matter how wrong it is. You feel justified in treating someone else unjustly. You wrap yourself in a false sense of honor and self-righteousness…but you also feel dirty. You’ve been slimed and now you own the slime that rightly covers you.
Let me bring you back to Jesus, back to Matthew 5-7 and two of his teachings: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; do to others as you would have them do to you. Are those teachings relevant today? Imagine how you could have avoided being slimed if you had listened to Jesus. Imagine how an enemy could have even became an ally or even a friend. If the enemy was unchangeable, imagine how you could have kept your honor and could have come out cleaner in the interaction. Imagine how a downward spiral could have taken an upward turn.
Hatred never takes anyone anywhere good. When we listen to the voices of hatred, we end up sliming not only our enemy but ourselves. We all come out dirty. There is no avoiding this even though the recognition of the slime may be delayed. No one escapes, all get slimed. The longer we allow the slime to stick to us, the more damage it does as it transforms us.
When we get slimed, we long to get clean again, to feel clean again. But how? The answer is Jesus. He was never restricted to the inside walls of church buildings. His teachings are relevant to living, and he can stop the sliming of people that is done through hatred in all kinds of places: at work, at home, in school, in the neighborhood, in churches, even in politics, and even in courtrooms. If we would just figure out how to do what Jesus says, we will end up in better places. Maybe we grow sick of the slime and we feel a need to be clean again. Jesus is the way. Try telling that to your enemies instead of sliming them.

La voz detrás de todo esto es Satanás, pero se escucha a través de muchas voces a nuestro alrededor. Esto puede hacer que sea difícil escuchar a Jesús. Quizás incluso te hayas encontrado expresando algo de ese odio, de alguna forma. O tal vez hayas apoyado a quienes estaban haciendo esto porque veías a su enemigo como tu enemigo. Cuando ves a alguien como un enemigo, te pierdes en el odio y terminas en lugares donde nunca imaginaste que estarías. Ningún trato hacia el enemigo es demasiado malo o incorrecto. De hecho, el fin de hacerles daño justificará los medios con los que lo hagas, sin importar lo equivocado que sea. Te sientes justificado al tratar injustamente a otra persona. Te envuelves en un falso sentido de honor y superioridad moral... pero también te sientes sucio. Te han bañado y ahora eres dueño del limo que te cubre con razón.
Permítanme traerlos de regreso a Jesús, de regreso a Mateo 5-7 y dos de sus enseñanzas: amen a sus enemigos y oren por los que los persiguen; haz a los demás lo que te gustaría que te hicieran a ti. ¿Son relevantes esas enseñanzas hoy? Imagínate cómo podrías haber evitado ser bañado si hubieras escuchado a Jesús. Imagínese cómo un enemigo podría haberse convertido incluso en un aliado o incluso en un amigo. Si el enemigo fuera inmutable, imagina cómo podrías haber mantenido tu honor y haber salido más limpio de la interacción. Imagínese cómo una espiral descendente podría haber dado un giro ascendente.
El odio nunca lleva a nadie a ningún lugar bueno. Cuando escuchamos las voces del odio, terminamos adelgazando no sólo a nuestro enemigo sino a nosotros mismos. Todos salimos sucios. Esto no se puede evitar, aunque el reconocimiento de la baba pueda retrasarse. Nadie escapa, todos se ensucian. Cuanto más tiempo permitimos que la baba se pegue a nosotros, más daño nos hará al transformarnos.
Cuando nos enlodamos, anhelamos volver a estar limpios, a sentirnos limpios de nuevo. ¿Pero cómo? La respuesta es Jesús. Nunca estuvo restringido a las paredes interiores de los edificios de la iglesia. Sus enseñanzas son relevantes para la vida y puede detener la difamación de las personas que se realiza a través del odio en todo tipo de lugares: en el trabajo, en el hogar, en la escuela, en el vecindario, en las iglesias, incluso en la política e incluso en los tribunales. . Si descubriéramos cómo hacer lo que Jesús dice, terminaríamos en mejores lugares. Tal vez nos cansemos del limo y sintamos la necesidad de estar limpios nuevamente. Jesús es el Camino. Intenta decirles eso a tus enemigos en lugar de adelgazarlos.
