The Way

Let’s do something together by doing some mental role-playing. Pull up a map and locate two cities. In our role-playing, we are in the same city (Point A). We are going to the second city (Point B). Your role is to lead, and my role is to follow. There are 3 routes that will get us to Point B: route 1, 2, and 3. You decide to take route 1 to get to Point B; I decide to take route 3 to get to Point B. We both end up at Point B, but did I follow you? No. I did my own thing.

Let’s say I also took route 1, like you. However, you rode a bicycle to get there, while I drove a car. I actually arrived before you because my mode of transportation was faster. We ended up in the same city, and we took the same route, but did I follow you? No. Once again, I did my own thing.

Let’s say you decided to drive a car by route 2 to get to Point B. I also drive a car by route 2, but I decide to stop short of Point B and stay put at Point C. Did I follow you? No. Once more, I did my own thing.

I’m not very good at following, am I?

If we are going to follow Jesus, how do we go about being good followers? Doesn’t it make sense that we need to listen to Jesus’ instructions about where he is going so that we go the same direction to the same destination? Doesn’t it make sense that we listen to Jesus so that we can learn how we are to make the journey? We can choose to go to a different location by a different way, but we can’t say we are following Jesus if we are doing our own thing. Here is a truth that is unchangeable: we can’t follow Jesus if we aren’t walking the same road he walked. Doesn’t that make sense?

Now let’s take that truth and make it crystal clear by looking at one of Jesus’ instructions: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Let that sink in. Does the road in life that you are traveling look like that? Can you say you are following Jesus?

El Camino

Hagamos algo juntos haciendo un juego de roles mental. Abra un mapa y ubique dos ciudades. En nuestro juego de roles, estamos en la misma ciudad (Punto A). Nos dirigimos a la segunda ciudad (Punto B). Tu papel es liderar y el mío es seguir. Hay 3 rutas que nos llevarán al Punto B: ruta 1, 2 y 3. Decides tomar la ruta 1 para llegar al Punto B; Decido tomar la ruta 3 para llegar al Punto B. Ambos terminamos en el Punto B, pero ¿te seguí? No. Hice lo mío.

Digamos que yo también tomé la ruta 1, como tú. Sin embargo, tú andaste en bicicleta para llegar allí, mientras que yo conducía un auto. De hecho, llegué antes que tú porque mi medio de transporte era más rápido. Terminamos en la misma ciudad y tomamos el mismo camino, pero ¿te seguí? No. Una vez más, hice lo mío.

Digamos que decides conducir un automóvil por la ruta 2 para llegar al punto B. Yo también conduzco un automóvil por la ruta 2, pero decido detenerme antes del punto B y quedarme en el punto C. ¿Te seguí? No. Una vez más, hice lo mío.

No soy muy bueno siguiendo, ¿verdad?

Si vamos a seguir a Jesús, ¿cómo podemos ser buenos seguidores? ¿No tiene sentido que necesitemos escuchar las instrucciones de Jesús sobre hacia dónde se dirige para que vayamos en la misma dirección al mismo destino? ¿No tiene sentido que escuchemos a Jesús para que podamos aprender cómo debemos hacer el viaje? Podemos elegir ir a un lugar diferente por un camino diferente, pero no podemos decir que estamos siguiendo a Jesús si hacemos lo nuestro. Aquí hay una verdad que es inmutable: no podemos seguir a Jesús si no caminamos por el mismo camino que él recorrió. ¿No tiene eso sentido?

Ahora tomemos esa verdad y dejémosla muy clara mirando una de las instrucciones de Jesús: “El que quiera ser mi discípulo, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día y sígame” (Lucas 9:23). Deje que eso se asimile. ¿Se parece así el camino de la vida que está recorriendo? ¿Puedes decir que estás siguiendo a Jesús?

Lucha con estos pensamientos esta semana. Vuelve el próximo domingo y exploraremos un poco más este camino. Por cierto, es posible que este camino le resulte más fácil de considerar si tiene a alguien mirándolo con usted.
