Instructions Included

“Follow Me.” This is a simple enough phrase, but what does it really mean? This can be nothing more to some people than just a claim of following Jesus. They identify

with Jesus, but not much more than that. For others, this means they are part of some “Christian” church; they may do nothing more than show up for worship once in a while and put a bit of money into an offering. Still for others, it means a partial change of lifestyle, at least the part they want to change. Then there are those who see this following as a radical change that completely turns life upside down (really it turns right side up). Which understanding is correct?

Thankfully, we are not left guessing. Jesus gave detailed instructions on what following him looks like. If you want to know those instructions, just go to one of four books in the Bible. They are called the gospels and they are named: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Pick one and read it. Read them all. As you read, pay attention to anything Jesus said, to anybody. Likely, his words will have some bearing on how to follow him. It actually does not take long to read any of these gospels. You can read the longest one for about 30 minutes a day and finish it in a week. You will find that you will spend more time thinking over what Jesus said, especially if you try to follow those words.

Some of Jesus’ teachings make a lot of sense and you probably live that way already. An example would be, “Do not murder.” Some of his instructions, however, will challenge you, because you might live just the opposite. An example of that would be, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” You may never have had such a hunger, in fact, you may have desired things that are very unrighteous. You might even have to spend some time figuring out what “righteousness” even is. In short, sometimes living by Jesus’instructions will be no big change, but at other times it will challenge you to the max.

Here is the simple truth to take with you: if you are going to really follow Jesus, you have to follow his instructions. That is how his followers are made. If you do not follow the instructions for making an apple pie, you will not end up with an apple pie. That is why reading and understanding these gospels is so important. These are the instructions that are included in the package.

Se llaman evangelios y se nombran: Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan. Elige uno y léelo. Léelos todos. Mientras lees, presta atención a todo lo que Jesús dijo, a cualquiera. Probablemente, sus palabras tendrán alguna relación con cómo seguirlo. En realidad, no lleva mucho tiempo leer cualquiera de estos evangelios. Algunas de las enseñanzas de Jesús tienen mucho sentido y probablemente ya vivas de esa manera. Un ejemplo sería: "No asesinar". Algunas de sus instrucciones, sin embargo, te desafiarán, porque podrías vivir todo lo contrario. Un ejemplo de eso sería: “Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia…” Es posible que nunca hayas tenido tal hambre; de ​​hecho, es posible que hayas deseado cosas que son muy injustas. Quizás incluso tengas que dedicar algo de tiempo a descubrir qué es la “rectitud”. En resumen, a veces vivir según las instrucciones de Jesús no supondrá un gran cambio, pero otras veces te desafiará al máximo.

Aquí está la simple verdad que debes llevar contigo: si realmente vas a seguir a Jesús, debes seguir sus instrucciones. Así se hacen sus seguidores. Si no sigues las instrucciones para hacer una tarta de manzana, no obtendrás una tarta de manzana. Por eso es tan importante leer y comprender estos evangelios.
