Possibilities

Why would sane people walk away from their livelihood to follow Jesus? I suggest to you that it was because of possibilities. If you read John 1:40-41 in the Bible, you will see what Andrew told his brother Peter about Jesus. This apparently is some additional information about an encounter they had with Jesus prior to him calling them, prior to them walking away from their careers to follow him. Andrew refers to Jesus as the Messiah. The Greek word for “Messiah” was “Cristos”, from which we get the English word “Christ”. To us that is just a title, possibly one that carries little meaning. For Andrew and Peter, and any Jew, it was a loaded title. It was a reference to a king, one who would re-establish the kingdom of Israel.

That possibility of a king was huge for those guys because they were sick of being oppressed by a foreign power that had occupied their land with armies, sucked the financial riches out of Israel to send back to Rome, and taken away the joy and pride that comes with being free. If it was possible that Jesus was the one that would lead them in a successful revolt then they would give up everything for that possibility of the better life to come.

Can you tap into that desire for a moment? Can you relate?

Think about the not so pleasing parts of your life, the parts that are unfair and that just stink. Think about the wounds and scars, emotional and physical, that you have received because of your life being hard. Consider how tired you are of carrying the burden of some oppressive load in your life. If someone came along and offered you a new life that set you free of all of that, would you follow that person? Would you go even further and follow that person if it meant you had to give up something, even a lot? My guess is that you would. My guess is we all would…just for the possibility of a better life.

We might not know a lot of the details of how things will change if we follow Jesus, and we might not even fully understand Jesus. However, if it is possible that he can set us free from the bad stuff in our lives, we might want to jump at the possibility. Jesus taught that not only is a better life possible if we follow him, he said the best life is ours. That sounds more like a reality than a possibility.

So here are my closing thoughts for this blog: What pain or oppressive burden are you desperately wanting to be free of? Would you give up your present life and follow Jesus in order to be free?

¿Por qué la gente sensata abandonaría su sustento para seguir a Jesús? Les sugiero que fue por posibilidades. Si fuera posible que Jesús fuera quien los guiara en una revuelta exitosa, entonces renunciarían a todo por esa posibilidad de una vida mejor por venir.

Piensa en las partes de tu vida que no son tan agradables, las que son injustas y que simplemente apestan. Piensa en las heridas y cicatrices, emocionales y físicas, que has recibido debido a que tu vida fue difícil. Considera lo cansado que estás de llevar el peso de alguna carga opresiva en tu vida. Si alguien apareciera y te ofreciera una nueva vida que te liberara de todo eso, ¿seguirías a esa persona? ¿Irías aún más lejos y seguirías a esa persona si eso significara que tuvieras que renunciar a algo, incluso a mucho? Mi conjetura es que lo harías. Supongo que todos lo haríamos... sólo por la posibilidad de una vida mejor.

Es posible que no sepamos muchos detalles de cómo cambiarán las cosas si seguimos a Jesús, y es posible que ni siquiera comprendamos completamente a Jesús. Sin embargo, si es posible que él pueda liberarnos de las cosas malas de nuestra vida, tal vez queramos aprovechar esa posibilidad. Jesús enseñó que no sólo es posible una vida mejor si lo seguimos, sino que dijo que la mejor vida es la nuestra. Eso suena más a una realidad que a una posibilidad.
