Crazy

There were these two guys fishing on a lake. Another guy walked to the edge of the lakeshore and called out to them. “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Crazy call, wasn’t it? What did the two guys in the boat do? They left their nets and their boat and they followed the other guy so that they could be fishers of men. Crazy!

The two guys fishing were named Peter and Andrew. The guy who called them was Jesus. This is the account of their journey with Jesus according to the gospel of Matthew. Matthew himself would have a similar crazy experience of being called to follow Jesus and leaving his business. Why did these guys do that? I doubt Peter and Andrew even knew what Jesus meant by the phrase “fishers of men.” They probably knew a little bit about Jesus and had seen him, but they didn’t understand him or really know him.

So why would these guys leave their businesses and follow Jesus when they new so very little? That is a pretty important question for us to answer. Why? Because Jesus calls us to follow him. Following him will mean we will have to give up something. We probably do not know what. We may not even know what it means to follow Jesus. We sure don’t know what is going to happen if we do follow him. And we may not really understand Jesus either, much less know him very well. We would be crazy to follow him, right?

It might help us decide if we will follow Jesus, if we figured out why those first guys followed Jesus. I give you an opportunity to try to figure that out. Ask other people what they think. Talk about the possibilities. Don’t settle for churchy kind of answers. Look reality in straight in the eyes and ask why any sane person would follow Jesus under such circumstances. Can you find a reason that would be strong enough for you to do the same?

While tossing aside one’s livelihood (or whatever) in order to follow Jesus may seem crazy, it is important to know that those first people were not crazy. What possibly could have stirred sane and rational people to do something that seems so crazy? Check back next week, you and your fellow conversationalists, and we will look further into this.

Loco

Había dos tipos pescando en un lago. Otro tipo caminó hasta el borde de la orilla del lago y los llamó. “Venid y seguidme, y os haré pescadores de hombres”. Llamada loca, ¿no? ¿Qué hicieron los dos chicos en el barco? Dejaron sus redes y su barca y siguieron al otro para ser pescadores de hombres. ¡Loco!

Los dos chicos que pescaban se llamaban Peter y Andrew. El tipo que los llamó fue Jesús. Este es el relato de su viaje con Jesús según el evangelio de Mateo. El mismo Mateo tendría una experiencia loca similar al ser llamado a seguir a Jesús y dejar su negocio. ¿Por qué estos tipos hicieron eso? Dudo que Pedro y Andrés supieran siquiera lo que Jesús quería decir con la frase "pescadores de hombres". Probablemente sabían un poco acerca de Jesús y lo habían visto, pero no lo entendían ni lo conocían realmente.

Entonces, ¿por qué estos tipos dejarían sus negocios y seguirían a Jesús cuando saben tan poco? Ésa es una pregunta bastante importante que debemos responder. ¿Por qué? Porque Jesús nos llama a seguirlo. Seguirlo significará que tendremos que renunciar a algo. Probablemente no sepamos qué. Quizás ni siquiera sepamos lo que significa seguir a Jesús. Seguro que no sabemos qué pasará si lo seguimos. Y es posible que tampoco entendamos realmente a Jesús, y mucho menos lo conozcamos muy bien. Estaríamos locos si lo siguiéramos, ¿verdad?

Podría ayudarnos a decidir si seguiremos a Jesús, si descubriéramos por qué esos primeros hombres siguieron a Jesús. Te doy la oportunidad de intentar resolverlo. Pregúntale a otras personas qué piensan. Habla sobre las posibilidades. No se conforme con respuestas del tipo eclesiástico. Mire la realidad directamente a los ojos y pregúntese por qué una persona cuerda seguiría a Jesús en tales circunstancias. ¿Puedes encontrar una razón que sea lo suficientemente fuerte como para que tú hagas lo mismo?

Si bien dejar a un lado el sustento (o lo que sea) para seguir a Jesús puede parecer una locura, es importante saber que aquellas primeras personas no estaban locas. ¿Qué pudo haber incitado a personas cuerdas y racionales a hacer algo que parece tan loco?
