World Power

There are many countries in history, past and current, that are described as world powers. We believe some to be good and some to be evil. The particular view one has depends on what country he or she is from. When we name world powers, we might name: United States, Russia, China. If we go into the past, we might name: England, France, Germany, Japan, Spain. If we wanted to go way back, we might name: Rome, Persia, Greece, Assyria, Egypt. These are countries that had such power that they spread their influence and will into other countries, not always peacefully. We are familiar with this kind of world power.

There is another world power though that often goes unconsidered: the kingdom of God. For some 2,000 years it has shaped this world. It has shaped and molded cultures; it has even challenged them. It has gone into countries where the powers that be tried to keep it out. At times, some people tried to force the kingdom of God on others by military might, but that was rightfully unsuccessful. The kingdom of God spreads when it wins the heart, not when it enslaves and oppresses the body.

Paul once wrote about the kingdom of God and its world-shaping message: In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the world (Colossians 1:6). There has been no power on earth like the kingdom of God and its gospel message. (By the way, “gospel” means “good news”; and you can understand how god news is appealing to people.) Have you ever wondered why the kingdom of heaven has remained a world-shaping power for so long? There is no earthly government that has come close to lasting for 2,000 years. You might want to give that some serious thought.

There are very few certainties and guarantees in life. You know how scary that can be at times. If you want certainty and guarantees for your life, the only place you can find good certainties and good guarantees that will hold is the kingdom of God. You probably should give that some serious thought.

Potencia Mundial

Hay muchos países en la historia, pasada y actual, que se describen como potencias mundiales. Creemos que algunos son buenos y otros malos. La visión particular que uno tenga depende del país de donde sea. Cuando nombramos potencias mundiales, podríamos nombrar: Estados Unidos, Rusia, China. Si nos remontamos al pasado, podríamos nombrar: Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania, Japón, España. Si quisiéramos retroceder mucho, podríamos nombrar: Roma, Persia, Grecia, Asiria, Egipto. Estos son países que tenían tal poder que extendieron su influencia y voluntad a otros países, no siempre de manera pacífica. Estamos familiarizados con este tipo de potencia mundial.

Sin embargo, hay otra potencia mundial que a menudo pasa desapercibida: el reino de Dios. Durante unos 2.000 años ha dado forma a este mundo. Ha moldeado y moldeado culturas; incluso los ha desafiado. Ha entrado en países donde los poderes fácticos intentaban mantenerlo fuera. A veces, algunas personas intentaron imponer el reino de Dios a otras mediante el poder militar, pero eso, con razón, no tuvo éxito. El reino de Dios se extiende cuando gana el corazón, no cuando esclaviza y oprime el cuerpo.

Pablo escribió una vez sobre el reino de Dios y su mensaje transformador del mundo: De la misma manera, el evangelio está dando fruto y creciendo en todo el mundo (Colosenses 1:6). No ha habido poder en la tierra como el reino de Dios y su mensaje del evangelio. (Por cierto, “evangelio” significa “buenas noticias”; y puedes entender cómo las noticias divinas atraen a la gente). ¿Te has preguntado alguna vez por qué el reino de los cielos ha seguido siendo un poder que moldea el mundo durante tanto tiempo? No existe ningún gobierno terrenal que haya estado cerca de durar 2.000 años. Quizás quieras pensar seriamente en eso.

Hay muy pocas certezas y garantías en la vida. Sabes lo aterrador que eso puede ser a veces. Si quieres certeza y garantías para tu vida, el único lugar donde puedes encontrar buenas certezas y buenas garantías que se mantendrán es el reino de Dios. Probablemente deberías pensar seriamente en eso.
