God and Politics

This instruction is written in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” Praying for political leaders is something that should be done by people of God. Why? Not for prosperity and power, but that we may have the opportunity to live godly and holy lives in peace.

Transport that instruction to current politics in the United States. We just went through a terrible time this weekend when the former president was almost assassinated. Many people gave thanks that he was not, and rightfully so.

Then the politics and rhetoric kicked in. Opponents of Donald Trump attempted to downplay the events or to put blame on him. His supporters started to to bring God into the chain of events, proclaiming divine intervention protected him, as if surely God is working to get Donald Trump elected to the presidency. One remark I heard several times was something like this, “The devil was in Butler PA this weekend, but God also showed up.”

Regarding the opponents, I’ll let their remarks speak for themselves as they reveal hardened hearts among other things. But what about the attempts to claim God intervened and he is the reason Donald Trump is alive today, is that true? Maybe so. Although I believe the Comperatore family might be asking why their loved one was not protected by God as well. And the Dutch and Copenhaver families may ask why God did not protect their loved ones who were seriously wounded. I would humbly suggest that political rhetoric was spinning events to proclaim a favorable message, which is what political rhetoric does. We should be careful when we attempt to wrap God up in such rhetoric.

Why do we always try to put God on “our side”? It is a natural tendency that we do quite often in various settings. We want God to be our rubber stamp of approval. If he is on our side, who can be against us, right? Yet, we often fail to look at ourselves accurately and see where we are wrong and where we need to change. We should want God’s approval, but first we should be willing to submit to his holiness so that he rightfully can approve us. Holiness was central to the instructions of 1 Timothy 2. Look at it again.

Perhaps God is raising up Donald Trump to be president. If so, we need to understand that holiness from Donald Trump and this nation is what God seeks from us. Perhaps God raises someone else up to be president or even keeps Joe Biden in office. If so, holiness will still be God’s agenda. Until we embrace that and submit to that, we will not get God’s stamp of approval no matter what the political rhetoric says. What we will get then will not be good.

So in upcoming blogs of timely thoughts, let’s take a look at God’s agenda for holiness and how that fits in with our politics.

Dios y la Política

Esta instrucción está escrita en 1 Timoteo 2:1-2: “Exhorto, pues, ante todo, a que se hagan súplicas, oraciones, intercesiones y acciones de gracias por todos los pueblos, por los reyes y por todos los que tienen autoridad, para que vivamos en paz y vive tranquilamente en toda piedad y santidad”. Orar por los líderes políticos es algo que debe hacer el pueblo de Dios. ¿Por qué? No para prosperidad y poder, sino para que tengamos la oportunidad de vivir vidas piadosas y santas en paz.

Transportar esa instrucción a la política actual en Estados Unidos. Acabamos de pasar por un momento terrible este fin de semana cuando el expresidente casi fue asesinado. Mucha gente agradeció que no fuera así, y con razón.

Entonces entraron en juego la política y la retórica. Los opositores de Donald Trump intentaron restar importancia a los acontecimientos o culparlo a él. Sus partidarios comenzaron a incluir a Dios en la cadena de acontecimientos, proclamando que la intervención divina lo protegía, como si seguramente Dios estuviera trabajando para que Donald Trump fuera elegido presidente. Un comentario que escuché varias veces fue algo como esto: "El diablo estuvo en Butler PA este fin de semana, pero Dios también apareció".

En cuanto a los oponentes, dejaré que sus comentarios hablen por sí solos, ya que revelan corazones endurecidos, entre otras cosas. Pero ¿qué pasa con los intentos de afirmar que Dios intervino y que él es la razón por la que Donald Trump está vivo hoy? ¿Es eso cierto? Tal vez sea así. Aunque creo que la familia Comperatore podría preguntarse por qué su ser querido no estaba también protegido por Dios. Y las familias holandesas y de Copenhaver pueden preguntarse por qué Dios no protegió a sus seres queridos que estaban gravemente heridos. Humildemente sugeriría que la retórica política estaba tergiversando los acontecimientos para proclamar un mensaje favorable, que es lo que hace la retórica política. Debemos tener cuidado cuando intentamos envolver a Dios en semejante retórica.

¿Por qué siempre tratamos de poner a Dios de “nuestro lado”? Es una tendencia natural que hacemos con bastante frecuencia en diversos entornos. Queremos que Dios sea nuestro sello de aprobación. Si él está de nuestro lado, ¿quién puede estar contra nosotros, verdad? Sin embargo, a menudo no logramos mirarnos a nosotros mismos con precisión y ver dónde estamos equivocados y dónde debemos cambiar. Deberíamos querer la aprobación de Dios, pero primero deberíamos estar dispuestos a someternos a su santidad para que él pueda aprobarnos legítimamente. La santidad era central en las instrucciones de 1 Timoteo 2. Véalo nuevamente.

Quizás Dios esté levantando a Donald Trump para que sea presidente. Si es así, debemos entender que la santidad de Donald Trump y de esta nación es lo que Dios busca de nosotros. Quizás Dios levante a alguien más para que sea presidente o incluso mantenga a Joe Biden en el cargo. Si es así, la santidad seguirá siendo la agenda de Dios. Hasta que aceptemos eso y nos sometamos a ello, no obtendremos el sello de aprobación de Dios, sin importar lo que diga la retórica política. Lo que obtendremos entonces no será bueno.
