Important Words

Why should anyone listen to Jesus and follow his teachings. After all, there are plenty of smart people, some who are living and well-respected, that we can listen to and follow. It might be a well known intellectual, a highly respected writer or philosopher, a favorite professor, a respected parent or a trusted friend. It could be another historical figure who has been highly regarded for ages. With all of these choices, why should anyone listen to Jesus? If you are asking that question, which you have a right to ask, I give you 2 simple reasons why you should listen to Jesus and follow his teachings above all others.

First, Jesus is put forth by God as his Son and the final judge of all people. These are teachings found in numerous places in the Bible. Read Matthew 24-25 to find a few of them. In Acts 2 of the Bible, the resurrection of Jesus is put forth as the ultimate proof that Jesus is indeed the Son of God and the one all will answer to. No other person, no matter how close to you or how highly respected they are, has such a place of ultimate and final authority.

If Jesus is the final judge and authority, then Matthew 25 reveals some declarations that Jesus will give when he is sent back to judge all people. Many people will hear something like, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come and share your Master’s happiness…” or “Come you who are blessed by my Father and take your inheritance which has been prepared for you since the creation of the world.” Many others, too many, will hear words like this, “Throw that worthless servant out into the darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…” or “Depart from me you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels…” These two extremes are the only possibilities.

Like it or not, the reality is that there will be a day of judgment. For some it will be a great and wonderful time of welcoming. For too many, it will be a dreadful day that will lead to a horrible end. We don’t talk about this much. Perhaps we live arrogantly or ignorantly and think such will never happen. There are some very smart people who choose not to believe, and they even ridicule those who do believe and who do follow Jesus. Have you considered that those very smart people will be part of the crowd who will be judged by Jesus. How do you suppose they will be feeling on that day? Will they be so arrogant? Will arrogance or ignorance be your friend on that day?

It is your choice to listen to Jesus or not, to follow him or not. The day will come though when you will have to listen to him, only then you will not have the choice to follow or not to follow. Your fate will already have been sealed when Jesus declares it. What will you hear on that day?

Maybe you should spend some time considering what many choose not to think about. Maybe you and those you know want to talk about what often goes unspoken. Now you have a choice that will determine how your eternity will play out. Choose well.

¿Por qué alguien debería escuchar a Jesús y seguir sus enseñanzas? Después de todo, hay muchas personas inteligentes, algunas vivas y muy respetadas, a las que podemos escuchar y seguir. Podría ser un intelectual conocido, un escritor o filósofo muy respetado, un profesor favorito, un padre respetado o un amigo de confianza. Si te haces esa pregunta, que tienes derecho a hacer, te doy 2 razones simples por las que debes escuchar a Jesús y seguir sus enseñanzas por encima de todas las demás.

Primero, Jesús es presentado por Dios como su Hijo y juez final de todos los pueblos. Estas son enseñanzas que se encuentran en numerosos lugares de la Biblia. Lea Mateo 24-25 para encontrar algunos de ellos. En Hechos 2 de la Biblia, la resurrección de Jesús se presenta como la prueba definitiva de que Jesús es en verdad el Hijo de Dios y a quien todos responderán. Ninguna otra persona, por muy cercana a usted o por muy respetada que sea, tiene semejante lugar de autoridad última y definitiva.

Si Jesús es el juez y la autoridad final, entonces Mateo 25 revela algunas declaraciones que Jesús hará cuando sea enviado de regreso para juzgar a todas las personas. Mucha gente escuchará algo como: “Bien hecho, buen siervo y fiel. Ven y comparte la felicidad de tu Maestro…” o “Venid, benditos de mi Padre, y tomad la herencia que ha sido preparada para vosotros desde la creación del mundo”. Muchos otros, demasiados, escucharán palabras como ésta: “Echad a ese siervo inútil a las tinieblas, donde será el llanto y el crujir de dientes…” o “Apartaos de mí, malditos, al fuego eterno preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles…” Estos dos extremos son las únicas posibilidades.

Nos guste o no, la realidad es que habrá un día del juicio. Para algunos será un gran y maravilloso momento de acogida. Para muchos, será un día terrible que conducirá a un final horrible. No hablamos mucho de esto. Quizás vivimos con arrogancia o ignorancia y pensamos que eso nunca sucederá. Hay algunas personas muy inteligentes que eligen no creer, e incluso ridiculizan a los que sí creen y siguen a Jesús. ¿Has considerado que esas personas tan inteligentes serán parte de la multitud que será juzgada por Jesús? ¿Cómo supones que se sentirán ese día? ¿Serán tan arrogantes? ¿Será la arrogancia o la ignorancia tu amiga ese día?

Es tu elección escuchar a Jesús o no, seguirlo o no. Sin embargo, llegará el día en que tendrás que escucharlo, sólo entonces no tendrás la opción de seguirlo o no seguirlo. Tu destino ya estará sellado cuando Jesús lo declare. ¿Qué escucharás ese día?

Quizás deberías dedicar algo de tiempo a considerar aquello en lo que muchos optan por no pensar. Tal vez usted y sus conocidos quieran hablar sobre lo que a menudo no se dice. Ahora tienes una elección que determinará cómo se desarrollará tu eternidad. Elige bien.
