Jesus once stated that he is truth and that his truth will set people free (John 8:31-32). We like the sound of that word “freedom”. In the same speech, he said that the devil lies, is the father of lies, and all who listen to him are his slaves. We hate the sound of that word “slave”. However, with our willingness to abandon truth for lies, consistently, you might think we prefer being slaves to lies.
Consider for a bit how lying has become the norm for politicians. Candidates accuse their opponents of lying while telling their own lies. People now get paid to fact check politicians and catch their lies. Sometimes the fact checkers get caught lying. This should turn our stomachs, but it doesn’t. We only get upset when the candidate we do not support seems to get away with his or her lies. We downplay lies if our candidate tells them, and we profess outrage when the other candidate lies. Why? We don’t mind being lied to when the lie is what we want to hear. Or we like the particular truths our candidate speaks so much that we put up with his or her lies. Or we believe that the other candidates lies are far worse than our candidate’s lies. So we sacrifice the whole truth to make room for the partial truth. This scenario seems to play out at various levels of the election cycle every time.
A forgotten truth is that truth is a big component of being holy. Being truthful was rooted in the 9th Commandment. You remember those 10 Commandments; they were given by God to people he was calling to be holy. Those people had been brought out of literal slavery. Truth would be a building block for staying free.
So here we are in modern times, advanced and progressed…to the point that truth is exchanged willingly for lies. We will vote for a liar, as long as we like the lies he or she tells. Because of political beliefs, we do not hold our liar to the standard of truth. So we might want to step back in this political season and look at what we have become. What is that? We have become slaves. Isn’t that a hard truth to swallow? If you doubt me, then try to persuade yourself and others to hold your candidate to the standard of truth.
Perhaps we do believe we are really better off with our lies than the other side’s lies. But when we consider that the devil is the father of lies, it doesn’t take long to realize slavery in a lesser degree is no better than slavery in a larger degree when we understand who has become our master. If holiness matters then truth in politics should matter.
Conoce la Verdad y Conoce la Libertad, Sin Verdad Ni Libertad
Jesús dijo una vez que él es la verdad y que su verdad hará libres a las personas (Juan 8:31-32). Nos gusta el sonido de esa palabra “libertad”. En el mismo discurso dijo que el diablo miente, es el padre de la mentira, y todos los que lo escuchan son sus esclavos. Odiamos el sonido de esa palabra "esclavo". Sin embargo, con nuestra disposición a abandonar la verdad por la mentira, de manera constante, se podría pensar que preferimos ser esclavos de la mentira.
Consideremos por un momento cómo mentir se ha convertido en la norma para los políticos. Los candidatos acusan a sus oponentes de mentir mientras dicen sus propias mentiras. Ahora a la gente se le paga por verificar los hechos de los políticos y descubrir sus mentiras. A veces los verificadores son sorprendidos mintiendo. Esto debería revolvernos el estómago, pero no es así. Sólo nos enojamos cuando el candidato que no apoyamos parece salirse con la suya. Restamos importancia a las mentiras si nuestro candidato las dice y profesamos indignación cuando el otro candidato miente. ¿Por qué? No nos importa que nos mientan cuando lo que queremos escuchar es la mentira. O nos gustan tanto las verdades particulares que dice nuestro candidato que toleramos sus mentiras. O creemos que las mentiras de los otros candidatos son mucho peores que las mentiras de nuestro candidato. Así que sacrificamos toda la verdad para dejar espacio a la verdad parcial. Este escenario parece repetirse cada vez en distintos niveles del ciclo electoral.
Una verdad olvidada es que la verdad es un componente importante de ser santo. Ser veraz tenía sus raíces en el noveno mandamiento. Recuerdas esos 10 Mandamientos; fueron dados por Dios a personas a las que estaba llamando a ser santas. Esas personas habían sido sacadas de la esclavitud literal. La verdad sería un elemento fundamental para permanecer libre.
Así que aquí estamos en los tiempos modernos, avanzados y progresados… hasta el punto que la verdad se cambia voluntariamente por mentiras. Votaremos por un mentiroso, siempre y cuando nos gusten las mentiras que dice. Debido a nuestras creencias políticas, no exigimos a nuestros mentirosos el estándar de la verdad. Así que tal vez queramos dar un paso atrás en esta temporada política y ver en qué nos hemos convertido. ¿Qué es eso? Nos hemos convertido en esclavos. ¿No es una verdad difícil de aceptar? Si dudas de mí, intenta convencerte a ti mismo y a los demás de que exijan a tu candidato el estándar de la verdad.
Quizás creemos que en realidad estamos mejor con nuestras mentiras que con las mentiras de la otra parte. Pero cuando consideramos que el diablo es el padre de la mentira, no lleva mucho tiempo darnos cuenta de que la esclavitud en menor grado no es mejor que la esclavitud en mayor grado cuando entendemos quién se ha convertido en nuestro amo. Si la santidad importa, entonces la verdad en política debería importar.
